Concerts Denman
2007-2008 Season
All concerts are held from 8-10pm at the Denman Island Community
Hall, a short walk from the ferry landing. Sumptuous desserts and
refreshments are available in the Back Hall following each performance,
where you also have the opportunity to speak with the artists about
their work. Concerts Denman's 17th season is poised and ready to
dazzle its audience once again with an eclectic array of music,
theatre and dance!
Tambura
Rasa
Friday, September 21
This opening concert of our season is a lively dive into the World
music arena. Described as "a diverse and unique style of gypsy-world-fusion",
the collective Tambura Rasa began as a duo merging classical Indian
with Balkan and Iberian influences. Since then, guitarist Ivan
Tucakov has joined with numerous ethnic musicians and dancers to
bring us a rich multicultural blend of contemporary grooves and
traditional rhythm - complete with belly dancers and fiery flamenco.
Valdy
and Gary Fjellgaard
Friday, October 12
"Western Roots" they call it - music that draws on all
the aspects of life in the West. Spend an evening with these well
known Canadian troubadours - two good, old friends who meld close
harmonies with fine guitar work and great songs. Valdy and Gary
are two memorable guys with two guitars and about two dozen or
more tunes to tell you where they’ve been, where they’re
at and where they’re headed. This concert is bound to be
an evening to remember.
Gryphon
Trio
Sunday, November 11
We welcome the Gryphon Trio back for this year’s Ruth Terry
Memorial Concert. Touring internationally since 1993, this Juno
award-winning trio has been described as "one of the best
ensembles of its kind in the world"(Globe & Mail). Annalee
Patipatanakoon, violin; Roman Borys, cello; and Jamie Parker, piano,
are a mainstay of CBC radio. The Trio’s celebrated recordings
for the Analekta label include works by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven,
Mendelssohn, Dvorak, and Lalo. We are pleased and honoured to have
these fine musicians back on our stage.

Chinese
Acrobats
and Silk Road Duo
Sunday, February 17
With grace, skill and dexterity, these acrobats perform everything
from balancing and contortion routines to plate-spinning, foot
juggling and unicycling. Sharing this evening is Silk Road Duo.
Qiu Xia He with her pipa, and her husband, multi-instrumentalist
Andre Thibault, will take us on a cultural exploration of China
through their music. This will be a true evening of the East which
will be enjoyed by everyone.
David
Locke-Norton and Simone Osborne
Friday, March 28
Don’t miss hearing two of Canada’s rising young opera
stars! 21-year-old baritone David Locke-Norton, studied under the
renowned baritone Peter Barcza, and has already performed numerous
roles on both sides of Canada and in Europe. 20-year-old soprano
Simone Osborne has also been busy on both sides of the Atlantic
since her debut at age 18. Both David and Simone were in Europe
last summer - Simone singing the title role of The Bartered Bride
with Opera Nuova, and David in the role of Papageno in The Magic
Flute in Prague.
Lorne
Elliott
Tuesday, April 29
What better way to end our season but to go madly off in all directions
with Lorne Elliott! He’s been
doing it since taking to the stage as a folk singer in 1974. Lorne’s
writing of fiction, monologues, songs and one-liners have culminated
in a very special show of comedy and music, totally original, entertaining,
uplifting and foolish enough to make anybody laugh. You can keep
the comedy seat warm by tuning in to his weekly show, "Madly
Off in All Directions" on CBC Radio. *Note that the concert
is being held on a weekday.
A Tribute to a
Lover of the Arts
Ruth
Terry was a valued supporter and patron of Arts Denman presentations.
She always enjoyed any opportunity to experience the arts in our
community. When she passed away in March of 2004, a fund was established
to help ensure the ongoing success of Concerts Denman and many
generous donations were made in her memory. Ruth would be thrilled
to know that this fund will continue to support live music and
theatre on Denman Island. She always believed that culture enriches
us and brings us closer together.
One event each year in the Concerts Denman Calendar will be designated
the Ruth Terry Memorial Concert, an opportunity to remember Ruth’s
spirit and to donate to the fund and to ensure its long term viability.
This year’s choice is the Gryphon Trio concert on Sunday,
November 11.
