Internet Services on Denman Island

ADSL is finally available!

After more than a year in development, Denman's ADSL high speed network has finally been rolled out. By law, Telus is required to open the network to other ISPs. This means that you do NOT have to buy ADSL service from Telus, and instead can go through your preferred ISP.

ADSL is not yet available to all locations on the island:

Available: Beaver Dr., Cokely Rd., Denman Rd. (3296-6003), Eaglecrest, East Rd. (3611-5695), Farley, Glen Ghorm, Greenhill Rd., Keith Wagner Way, Kirk Rd., Lacon Rd. (1055-3395), Lake Rd. (2550-3336), McFarlane Rd., Nelson Cres., Nixon Rd., Northwest Rd. (1146-4600), Owl Cres., Pickles Rd., Piercy Rd., Reginald Rd., Scott Rd., Stanehill Pl., Thomas, Triple Rock Rd., Tronson Rd., Trueman Pl., Woodham, Wren Rd.

Coming soon: East Rd. (5735-6890), Lacon Rd. (3421-6650)

Undetermined: Baikie Rd., Beadnell, Chrisman Rd., Corrigal, Country Pl., Dalziel Rd., Denman Rd. (6611-7756), Dusty Rd., East Rd. (1171-2865), Gladstone Way, Jemima Rd., Komas Rd., Lake Rd. (3660-3870), Mabel, Mallard Way, Marcus, North Central Rd, Northwest Rd. (5100-7676), Rayelyn Lane, Schmidt Rd., Swan Rd, Westcliffe Rd., Yule.

*Please note: Even if you live in an "available" area, there is still the chance that your number cannot be serviced by ADSL. Contact Telus for more information: 310-4NET (310-4638).

Do you live in a "coming soon" or "undetermined" area?

The only way to get ADSL service to those areas is to let Telus know that you want the service. The more people they hear from, the more likely they are to complete the roll out to Denman Island. You can either run the availability and system requirements wizard on the Telus website and add your name to their contact list, or call Telus at 310-4NET (310-4638). Remember: You do NOT have to buy ADSL service from Telus if you would prefer to buy from another ISP. Telus owns the ADSL infrastructure though, so they are the only ones who can enable the service to "coming soon" and "undetermined" areas on Denman Island. Get in touch with Telus today and let them know you want it!

Thank you to Craig Williams for providing the information about ADSL by location.

Satellite Internet

Xplornet (formerly Lincsat) and Galaxy Broadband both offer high speed satellite Internet access anywhere in Canada. The service provides fast download speeds (up to 500 kbps), and installation is free. Visit the xplornet.com or galaxybroadband.ca websites to find local resellers. Cons: Expensive for casual users ($79-$149/mo plus annual $75 admin and one time $49 system access fees); 1-2 year contract; slow upload speed (up to 50kbps); somewhat unreliable, especially with poor weather conditions.

Xplornet also has the exclusive rights for distribution of Telesat Ka Band Internet service (aka "Wild Blue" in the U.S.). The Ka System Costs $499, plus install, for a total of $799. $54.99 per month for a minimum connection of 512k down / 128K up. The highest plan offers 2.0 MB down / 500 KB up. With a 3 year commitment there are no yearly access charges or admin fees. Just $54.99 per month, guaranteed! For more information, please contact Rod Armstrong, FixIt Mobile Communications, at (250) 898-7269.

Dial-up Internet

Dial-up Internet access is available through several Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that link Denman up to the online world.

Uniserve is Western Canada's largest independent Internet service provider, and five time winners of the Consumers' Choice Award for business excellence.

Other ISPs that service Denman Island:

  • Telus
  • Island Internet
  • Digital Ark
  • Earthlink
  • AOL
  • Probably several more…

Dial-up service can be had for a very low cost these days, with unlimited access plans available in the $20-$30/month range, and starter packages for less than $10/month.
